Home vs Public EV Charging Cost UAE 2026

If you’re charging an EV at home in Dubai, you’re paying DEWA’s residential electricity tariff, not a special EV rate. Charge at a public station instead and you’re on a completely different pricing structure. The gap between the two can be large — but exactly how large depends on which source you check, because public third-party guides currently disagree on DEWA’s public charging rates. Here’s what’s solid, what’s disputed, and how to work out your own number.

Home charging: DEWA’s residential tariff (this part is solid)

Charging at home simply adds to your normal DEWA bill, which uses a slab (tiered) structure plus a fuel surcharge and 5% VAT:

Add DEWA’s fuel surcharge (AED 0.060/kWh as of June 2026) and 5% VAT, and a car’s home charging cost depends entirely on which slab your total household usage falls into once the EV’s consumption is added — an EV can easily push a home from the first slab into the second.

Public charging: the part where sources disagree

This is worth being upfront about: two otherwise-credible guides to DEWA’s EV Green Charger public network quote very different per-kWh rates for 2026 — one says AC charging is AED 0.29/kWh and DC fast charging AED 0.48–0.55/kWh; another says AC is AED 0.64/kWh + VAT and DC is AED 1.14/kWh + VAT, more than double. We couldn’t confirm either figure directly against DEWA’s own published tariff page at the time of writing, so treat both as indicative rather than exact, and always check the current rate in the DEWA EV app or at the charger itself before relying on it for a budget.

Even at the low end, public DC fast charging costs noticeably more than a home charge — and at the high-end estimate, a full public DC charge can cost close to 4× what the same energy would cost plugged in overnight at home. This matches the general pattern reported everywhere: home charging is consistently the cheapest option, public AC is a step up, and public DC fast charging carries the biggest premium, in exchange for speed.

What this means practically

  • If you can charge at home overnight, it’s very likely your cheapest option regardless of which public rate estimate turns out to be accurate.
  • Public DC fast charging is a convenience premium for topping up quickly on the road, not a like-for-like alternative to home charging.
  • Because the public per-kWh rate is genuinely unclear right now, don’t budget an EV’s running cost around public charging figures you’ve read on a blog (including this one) without checking the live rate in DEWA’s own app first.
