Registration renewal is one of those recurring UAE car costs that’s easy to forget about until the reminder SMS arrives. Here’s what it actually costs in Dubai in 2026, broken down by whether your car needs an inspection or not.
Base renewal fee, by vehicle type
| Vehicle type | Renewal fee |
|---|---|
| Light vehicle (under 3 tons — most private cars) | AED 350 |
| Medium vehicle (3–12 tons) | AED 400 |
| Heavy vehicle (over 12 tons) | AED 800 |
| Motorcycle | AED 200 |
Do you need an inspection first?
Private cars are exempt from RTA roadworthiness testing for their first 3 years. After that, a passing inspection at a Tasjeel-approved centre is required every time you renew — so the real cost of renewal depends heavily on your car’s age:
- Under 3 years old: no inspection needed — just the renewal fee plus admin charges.
- 3 years or older: inspection required, typically AED 150–170 for a light vehicle (plus an AED 35 re-test fee if it fails the first time).
Worked totals
| Scenario | Estimated total |
|---|---|
| Light vehicle, under 3 years old (no inspection) | ~AED 370–395 (renewal + ~AED 20 Knowledge & Innovation fee + ~AED 20–25 card fee) |
| Light vehicle, 3+ years old (inspection required) | ~AED 520–565 (renewal + inspection + admin fees) |
The Knowledge & Innovation fee and card delivery fee are cited by one of our two sources and not contradicted by the other, but weren’t independently confirmed by both — treat the “~AED 370–395” and “~AED 520–565” totals as a realistic planning range, not an exact government-published figure. Always check the exact amount in the RTA Dubai Drive app or website before paying.
Late renewal: don’t let this lapse
Missing the renewal window isn’t just a hassle — both sources we checked cite a late fee of AED 500 per month after the grace period, and a further penalty (also cited as AED 500) if the registration stays expired for more than 3 months, on top of the normal renewal cost. Driving on an expired registration can also mean your insurance doesn’t pay out on a claim, which is a much bigger cost than the fee itself.
How this fits into your total running cost
Registration renewal is a small but recurring line in your car’s real annual cost, alongside insurance, Salik, fuel and maintenance. Add it to the Car Running Cost Calculator under “additional annual cost” to see how it affects your true monthly number.
